Rarely are we afforded the space, time and resources to genuinely take risks in our practice (robbed of play and room to fail) There are so few of us that are KNOWN but so many of us who exist.
When we are able to create, we’re often doing so with the weight of our entire sex and generations and generations and generations of women who have tried and failed, and been buried under patriarchal oppression on our backs.
There’s long been a proliferation of mediocre male artists who are granted the luxury to do whatever they want. Yet, as a woman, the pressure to be EXTRAORDINARY to be WORTHY of opportunities that could have gone to men, to be NOT LIKE OTHER GIRLS is very real and very stifling.
Women’s resources are already so limited, having to fulfill roles and expectations and give, give, give because age old tropes of women being caregivers and nurturers are still reinforced.
There are countless untold stories and unknown contributions that women have been making since the dawn of time to the creation of art and the expansion of human consciousness. But HIStory values even the most low-grade efforts of the male more.
Patriarchy keeps us small, even to the point where we’re terrified to be anything BUT SMALL. It drains US ALL of our precious energy, endlessly forcing us into an objective state of comparison and misplaced striving.
Patriarchy is fear-based conditioning.
I’M TIRED OF PLAYING SMALL.
